It must have been particularly galling, then, for Blumenthal to read in The New York Times last week that “some Democrats” have begun calling him “Martha Coakley in pants.”

The story judged that Blumenthal had “flopped” in his debate last month with Merrick Alpert, who is running against Blumenthal for the Democratic nomination. Alpert, who accused Blumenthal of avoiding a second debate, now has a funny video on YouTube in which he puts questions to Blumenthal, shown strutting and squawking like a chicken.

Alpert isn’t widely known around the state and some have questioned the chicken theme as unbefitting a Senate candidate . . .
